How To Create A Dice in 3DS Max

In this tutorial we will learn how to create a dice in 3DS Max. We will be using a smoothing technique for creating rounded corners and smooth dents. Enjoy!

Step 1.

Let's start by setting our System Unit Setup to Generic Units. We can do this by going to the top Main Toolbar and go into Customize.

From the menu select Units Setup.

In the Units Setup dialog under Display Unit Scale, select Generic Units, then press OK.

Step 2.

First let's maximize the Perspective viewport, press ALT W on the keyboard.

We will now pop over to the Geometry panel, scroll down under Standard Primitives and select a Box.

Carry on scrolling down to Creation Method and select Cube.

Open Keyboard Entry, make sure the XYZ axis are set to 0. This will place the cube in the centre of the world.

Then type in 50 for Length, Width and Height.

Next press the Create button.

Step 3.

Let's convert the Cube to an editable poly, so right click and select Editable Poly from the fly-out menu.

Step 4.

Let's pop over to the panel and in the Editable Poly subdivision select Polygons.

Now we can to select all the polygons, press CTRL A on the keyboard.

Orbit around and make sure you have all the polygons.

Step 5.

Next pop over to the panel, scroll down to Edit Polygons and click on the small Settings icon for Inset.

Let's look in the caddy, first select Inset By Polygon,

Then in Inset Amount set to 3.

And press OK. (You may need to press the OK twice)

Step 6.

We need to straighten the object, so go up to the ViewCube and press Front

We can go back to the Editable Poly subdivision and select Edge

Then we can drag the cursor down the centre of the edges, from top to bottom, selecting also the edges on the opposite side.

Step 7.

Next pop over to the panel, scroll down to Edit Edges and click on the small Settings icon for Connect.

Let's look in the caddy, first set Segments to 1,

And press OK.

Step 8.

Then we can drag the cursor through the centre of the edges, from right to left, selecting also the edges on the opposite side.

Step 9.

Back over to the panel, and click on the small Settings icon for Connect

Here again, set Segments to 1,

And press OK.

Step 10.

We wil use the ViewCube to orbit around, so click on the small triangular icon on the top of the ViewCube and this will takes us to a Top view of the object.

Then we will drag the cursor through the centre of the edges, from right to left, selecting also the edges on the opposite side.

Step 11.

We can pop over to the panel and click on the small Settings icon for Connect.

In the caddy we will set Segments to 1,

And press OK.
